Being courteous, just like Ecuadorian citizens. You have to say hello to the people who are present in the place you are coming in. This way you will easily make contact with a population that will be happy to advise you
Take care of your stuff! On markets and in the bus (especially at night), do not let your stuff unattended. Always keep your bags with you. There are many pickpockets and they are cunning.
Offering the right price for any purchase or rendered service. It is a chance to be generous at low cost.
Respect the environment, avoid being too noisy in nature reserves and parks and do not throw your garbage on the ground.
Always carry money with you. It can happen to go for miles without passing a cash machine (especially in the Galapagos), so be careful and plan ahead.
Try to communicate in Spanish, even if it’s just a few words. Even if English is more and more widespread, it is a form of politeness and the best way to show that you make an effort.
Bring clothing for all seasons. While it can be very hot on the coast and humid in the Amazon, it can be very cold in the Andes. Notice that Quito is the second highest capital in the world.
Don’t hesitate to ask for directions. The Ecuadorians will be happy to point out and explain to you.
What not to do:
Drinking tap water. Prefer spring water: bottled spring water or purified water are readily available.
Photographing locals. You will often see them refusing to have their picture taken or hiding their face if you try to take picture of them. If you really want to take a picture of a person, ask her beforehand with a big smile; hopefully this person will accept.
Venturing alone on unknown paths. Take a guide, you will certainly see more and be safe. You’ll see that some areas require it.
Picking flowers or plants in Amazon and Galapagos Islands. In one hand you risk unpleasant surprises (bugs, poisonous plants), but it is mostly forbidden! Do not forget that most species are protected.
If you want to travel to Ecuador do not hesitate to turn yourself to Ecuatraveling who will happily and professionally help.
